Taipei Fine Arts Museum

Taipei doesn't lack for museums, some of the more unusual ones including the Ethnology Museum, the Museum of World Religions and the Lin Liu-hsin Puppet Theatre Museum. Among our favourites is the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.

One of the reasons we like it so much is because the exhibitions change frequently, so there's always something new to see whenever we go. Another reason is because the exhibits span a wide range of media, so that you're never quite sure what you'll encounter within each room.

Many exhibits are also interactive, as we discovered on a recent trip.

While relaxing in bed in one room,

we listened to a visitor displaying his talents on the baby grand nearby.

Other exhibits were less participatory but equally interesting. This was an artist's self exploration of her pregnancy and the experience of nurturing her child.

We weren't sure what this one was about, but it was striking and atmospheric.

Adjoining the Fine Arts Museum is a separate display covering the history of technological innovation in Taiwan. Anything with a vaguely computer-oriented focus drew the inevitable close attention from my son.

Many of these exhibits were also interactive, but some carried warning signs to keep off.
Visiting the Taipei Fine Arts Museum is a half day's worth of interesting meanderings. Just be careful not to stampede.
